One of the major problems students have here on campus is finding a good part time job that provides reasonable hours to help pay our way through college. Campuses throughout the State have different ways they provide or offer jobs to their students, here at Ole Miss students are encouraged to first go to the Human Resources page to be educated on recent jobs and job openings.
I had the opportunity to sit down with a few college students who hold part time jobs here on campus and off. Heather, a Dorm Desk Receptionist, explains her job description as checking guests in and out and enforcing the "two guest per room" rule. Negatives that she feels the job brings is being blamed for people getting locked out or when people sneak guests in without them knowing. A few positives she believes though, is that they are able to get most of their work done and they get to meet lots of new people. As a part time worker, Heather says she believes being a DR, you get the best hours because the job is 24 hours, when all other desk jobs shut down after a certain hour in the day.
Mary-Alden, a Rec. Staff member at the Turner Center, explicated her job description to me as greeting people, making sure no one sneaks in, and also providing towels and sports epuipment when she is assisting in the equipment room. positives she feels from the job is having time to study and get work done and that the job is fairly easy, whereas a negative about it is that it simply gets pretty boring sometimes. Being a part time worker at the turner, they allow each worker 15 hours max. per week, Mary-Alden says the hours are fine with her but constantly hears her coworkers complain about the short hours.
Tiesha, a Walmart employee, says that the job is very demanding and the job requires you to be a cashier one day and maybe the next you will be a door greeter. Negatives from the job, Tiesha says, is that with all the long hours, there is no time to study and it is easy to fall behind on your work if you're not deidicated and consistent. Positives she explains are it gives you the opportunity to balance your educational with your social and she believes the money is best there. Tiesha believes that the hours are best at Walmart if you're looking for good money, only thing is you have to learn to balance the long hours and school at the same time.
Ultimately, part-time jobs to some may be easy to come by and to some they are not, but college students have to plan first.
